|Claire and me at the finish line. Exhausted but in love with the loppet.|
This year we were treated with a spectacular sunrise just east of Lake Louise. The snow was perfect in the still valley, and the canvas of white turned all shades of pink as the sky lit up with a new day. I actually caught myself saying aloud, "I LOVE WINTER". It just slipped right out of my mouth.
I'm not much of a skier.....mostly because I have a phobia of going downhill. I take my time. I snowplow the crap out of the trail. Sometimes, I get really nervous and even sit on the back of my skis like a toboggan. Curiously, I have never seen that technique used in the Olympics, but it works for me. This year, I only fell once, which I count as a huge victory. It was more of a controlled evasive dive into a snow bank in order to avoid a tree. Thankfully, I didn't break a rib.....like the last time I raced on skis.
This year, I was 6 hours, 39 minutes and 21 seconds......a massive 26 seconds ahead of my 2011 previous best, and that included the time I paused to oogle the sunrise! It was good for 6th place (out of 11 women). The degree of total body exhaustion that I felt at the finish line signaled a great Barkley training day.
I am proof that you don't have to be good to have a go.
